Dirty Old Town

8pm SALFORD LADS' CLUB

Commissioned by CRIS, CDH Creatives and GMMAZ, working with the BBC Philharmonic, DJ G Cut and Rawchestra, this exciting new Youth Project combines live music and film in a tribute to the work of Salford's legendard singer, songwriter, playwright, and folk archivist, Ewan MacColl.

MacColl’s iconic song “Dirty Old Town”, written in 1949 about Salford’s industrial landscape at the time, will act as a starting point for a new cinematic orchestra to create a soundtrack for contemporary moving images created by young people about the city today. This new orchestra will made up of a combination of traditional orchestral instrumentalists, drummers and percussionists, guitarists, keyboard players, singers and any body else that turns up, and will create a totally new performance repertoire in response to young people’s films and visions of Salford.

The final piece will be performed live at the legendary Salford Lads' Club in sync with the final edit of the film.

This event is part of the SALFORD YOUTH FILM FESTIVAL.

He was Salford's Welles and King of Manchester Exploitation movies. He was a pioneer of independent filmmaking in the region. And now there's a book. You should own it.

UNDERSTANDING THE PAST

In our past is our future. Understand one, and you can better visualise the other. This selection of films from the North West Film Archive offers a glimpse of the world that was, here in Salford - some of it now lost forever, some of it simply altered be
